What's the best way to communicate from a cruise ship?

Great question!

Sure there’s a phone in your stateroom cabin but a ship to shore telephone call might run $7.00 per minute.

Yes your cell phone will generally work but your phone service company may charge $3.00 & up per minute to access the network.

My preference when sailing is to use the Internet. I communicate with email and VOIP services like Skype.

The best bargain is to buy a bulk package of minutes. This strategy can change your Internet access costs from the open rate of 75 cents/minutes down to about 20 to 30 cents per minute.
